Urban League Students Boost Their Education During College Tour and Competition
Fort Lauderdale, FL – April 23, 2015 – This spring, more than 75 youth in the Urban League of Broward County enhanced their education by touring colleges and participating in a Brain Bowl competition.
Close to 60 teens visited six universities across Florida to get a better understanding of college life and learn about opportunities to attend those schools. The colleges they visited were University of Florida, University of South Florida, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Florida State University, Bethune Cookman University, and University of Central Florida.
Around the same time, about 20 other students won awards in National Achievers Society’s Annual State Brain Bowl Competition in Tampa. The Brain Bowl is designed to motivate students to improve skills in mathematics, writing and reading. Students prepare for the competition for months by solving challenging mathematical problems; reading college level written works; and learning and using advanced vocabulary in writing and speech.
“Our students learned so much this year on the tour of the colleges and in the competition in the Brain Bowl,” said Germaine Smith-Baugh, Ed.D., president and CEO of Urban League of Broward County. “We’re proud of them and all they have accomplished.”
