Urban League Hosts “Operation Trust” To Focus on Victims’ Rights, Offender Rehabilitation and Crime Prevention

The Urban League of Broward County is hosting a forum on April 23 called “Operation Trust,” to bring attention to victims’ rights, offender rehabilitation, and crime prevention.

The event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Urban League of Broward County headquarters in Fort Lauderdale is part of our agency’s efforts to improve resident’s understanding of the judicial process – how to interact with law enforcement, comprehend their rights, and be clear on what to do if they are victims of crime. The Urban League of Broward County also offers educational programs to prevent at-risk youth from getting into trouble with the law. 

One of the areas of focus during the Operation Trust forum will be restorative justice -- a practice within the criminal justice system that focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims and the community at large. It emphasizes accountability, making amends, and potentially facilitated meetings between victims, offenders, and other persons to repair the harm caused by crime.

“Operation Trust is an in-depth discovery of the principles and practices of creating a culture of peace in urban communities,” said Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of Urban League of Broward County.

She added: “We in the business of breaking the cycle of poverty for our residents, and restoring peace, as well as understanding your rights and responsibilities, is all part of giving people a chance at a better life.”
