Winner will launch resources to address diabetes issues for residents of Broward County
The Urban League of Broward County (ULBC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering communities and changing lives in the areas of education, jobs, housing and health, is the recipient of this year’s $350,000 Humana Communities Benefit charitable grant in Fort Lauderdale, funded by the Humana Foundation.
“The Humana Foundation honors outstanding nonprofit organizations using transformative strategies to help prevent diabetes and congestive heart failure in their community,” said Virginia Kelly Judd, Executive Director of the Humana Foundation. “We are delighted that the Humana Communities Benefit judging process selected Urban League of Broward County for the program’s top grant and are confident their work will improve the health and well-being of residents throughout the Fort Lauderdale-area.”
ULBC operates nearly 20 initiatives in Broward County, including prevention and intervention education about chronic diseases. They will use the grant to launch multiple programs to educate residents diagnosed with or at-risk for diabetes, as well as their caregivers, on how to improve their quality of life. The ULBC will use the six-week, evidence-based Stanford Medicine Chronic Self-Management curriculum to educate residents on managing diabetes, healthy eating, reading food labels, stress management, positive thinking, exercise, medication usage, depression management and working with health care professionals. The organization will develop a mobile-friendly marketing campaign to provide easy access to diabetes information and recruit volunteer health workers to teach new techniques and skills to community members.
“The diabetes rate of African-Americans in Broward County, which is 210 percent higher than the country’s rate, is a major issue,” said Dr. Germaine Baugh, president and CEO of Urban League of Broward County. “We are thankful to the Humana Foundation for supporting this vital diabetes prevention initiative to improve the health of our community.”
Nonprofit organizations in Broward County were eligible to apply for this year’s grant in Fort Lauderdale, where the grant was offered for the first time. The Humana Communities Benefit program awards nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations $350,000, paid over a three-year period in each eligible location.
“Education is an important facet in the mission to combat diabetes, and that is why we’re certain the Urban League of Broward County’s plan will successfully improve the health of Broward County residents,” said Dr. Fernando Valverde, Regional Market President for Humana’s South and North Florida Medicare Markets. “The Urban League is a true catalyst for change and we’re eager to see how this organization will empower and excite individuals to improve their well-being.”
The American Diabetes Association, an organization committed to educating the public about how to stop diabetes and support those living with the disease, and the American Heart Association, whose mission is to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke, were the two other finalists for the grant in Fort Lauderdale.
The three organizations participated in the online community vote hosted on HumanaHCBVote.com. The online vote gave the public the opportunity to weigh in on which organization it felt was most deserving of the Humana Communities Benefit grant. The public’s results were integrated into the final round of judging, consisting of formal presentations to a panel of community leaders and business representatives, which decided the recipient of the three-year, $350,000 Humana charitable grant.
