New Pathway Connects Two Historic Institutions

Fort Lauderdale, FL – March 4, 2015 – The “Path to Enrichment Community Walkway” now connects two Broward County institutions that educate, empower and change lives. The new pathway links the campuses of Urban League of Broward County and  African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, which are next to each other in the heart of historic black communities along Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale.

“There’s no better way to connect the missions of the Urban League of Broward County and African-American Research Library and Cultural Center than a walking pathway through which people can visitor our buildings and experience first-hand our work in educating and uplifting the communities we serve,” said Germaine Smith-Baugh, Ed.D., president and CEO of Urban League of Broward County. 

The February 25 opening of the pathway was done in conjunction with the celebration of Jon Garon becoming the new dean of the Shepard Broad Law Center at Nova Southeastern University. During the ceremony at the Urban League of Broward County, special recognition was given to the Pettis Family. Mr. Pettis is an attorney who served as Florida Bar's first black president and is married to Sheila Pettis, a board member of Urban League of Broward County.  “We hope that this pathway becomes a lasting symbol of our community coming together and giving hope and opportunity to all citizens through access to the incredible resources offered at the Broward County Urban League and the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center."

Other contributors to the project include W. George Allen and Enid Meadows Allen, Jay and Rebecca Cohen, Representative Bobby and Yvette DuBose, Samuel F. Morrison and Senator Chris and Desorae Smith, and Sidney and Maxine Calloway.
