Hurricane Irma

For Immediate Release

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL September 6, 2017 – Based on the severity of the impending storm (Hurricane Irma) and to ensure safety for all, the Urban League of Broward County offices will be closed on Thursday, September 7, 2017, until it can safely regain access.

The National Hurricane Center has indicated that Hurricane Irma has maintained its trajectory and Category 5 (five) status. The Urban League will take all appropriate measures to ensure public safety before resuming operations. “Protocols have already begun to ensure the safety and well-being of our community, staff and property in preparation of Hurricane Irma,” said Urban League President and CEO, Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those in the pathway of Irma as the hurricane makes landfall. Be safe. God’s blessings.”

For updates on Hurricane Irma, residents are encouraged to monitor local news stations, subscribe to AlertBroward – an emergency notification system for Broward County residents – or download the free FEMA mobile application for real-time weather updates, traffic and flood conditions, shelter openings and evacuation listings. It also includes information about what to include in emergency kits and where to report power outages in Florida. The FEMA mobile app provides National Weather Service alerts, safety reminders, locations of shelters and where to talk to FEMA in person. Users can also upload and share disaster photos to help first responders.
