Broward County Youth Celebrate College Plans Thanks to The Florida Lottery Grant
Fort Lauderdale, FL (June 20, 2024): The Urban League of Broward County is excited to announce a $25,000 grant from The Florida Lottery to support its College Access and Community Justice programming. These initiatives culminate in a year-end College Decision Day celebration honoring graduating high school seniors as they unveil their college plans, bringing together students and the community.
The Florida Lottery presented the Decision Day, partnering with Nova Southeastern University, Teleperformance and Office Depot. “A solid education is the cornerstone to a successful life, said Florida Lottery Secretary John Davis. "Equally important is to have positive people in organizations like this one in your life who are investing in the future of young Floridians.” Buzzing with the same energy as National Signing Day for college athletes, graduating seniors proudly announced their next steps, whether continuing their education at colleges or pursuing skilled trades at trade schools. Adding to the celebration, each student received an iMac computer courtesy of Teleperformance.
The Urban League's College Access and Community Justice programs prioritize academic and cultural achievements, leadership development, and reducing risky behaviors associated with substance abuse and delinquency. These programs include the National Achievers Society, College Tour, Asset Building Leaders to Excellence, and STEM Ready.
"The Urban League extends its gratitude to The Florida Lottery for their continuous support," said Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh, president and CEO of the Urban League of Broward County. "The event not only celebrates the impactful educational programs offered by the Urban League, but also recognizes their dedication to empowering youth for success in higher education, trade schools, the military, or fulfilling careers."
